Youth Sports Physicals

August 1, 2023

Mille Lacs Health System wants to remind you that with summer here, it’s a great time to schedule exams that your child may need. For students participating in school sports, a “Sports Physical” is required every three years (grades 7-12). With a generous donation from the Mille Lacs Area Health Foundation, we will cover any out of pocket expenses for sports physicals to local athletes. School districts sponsored in this offer include: Onamia, Isle, Milaca, Pierz, & Ogilvie.

This offer runs from August 1, 2023 – November 1, 2023, and is limited to the first 100 students. A sports physical includes: a physical/well-child exam, hematocrit (lab), immunizations, vision screening & hearing screening.

Mille Lacs Health System encourages physical activity for youth however it comes. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) finds the overall health benefits from physical activity and organized sports participation may include better overall mental health, higher bone mineral density (especially in adult women who spent time during their youth playing sports), and a decrease in cardiovascular risk and obesity.

Organized sports participation may also aid in the development of physical skills, such as hand-eye coordination, functional movement skills and strength, and academic, self-regulatory, and general life skills. The social benefits can be found through new friendships, teamwork, and learning how to win, and how to lose. Overall these experiences can lead to both improved social identity and social adjustment.

Schedule your child’s “sports physical” as you would any other clinic appointment. Call 320-532-3154, press option one. Mille Lacs Health System has clinics in Onamia, Isle, Garrison, Hillman, & Milaca.
Times and availability fill up fast, so call soon to get scheduled.

To save time at your appointment, you can print the state mandated form from our website and fill out some of your basic information. Visit www.mlhealth.org, find the drop down menu along the top of the page called “Patients & Visitors”, click on “Patient Resources”, and under the “Important Patient Forms” you’ll find the “Sports Qualifying Physical Examination Medical Eligibility Form.” Your provider will complete the form at your appointment and return to you before you leave, ready to be turned in to your child’s school.
