Share the Gift of Time: Volunteer with MLHS Home Care

December 11, 2024

The holiday season can be an especially lonely time for individuals who are homebound, particularly those without family nearby or frequent visitors. Mille Lacs Health System’s Home Care & Hospice program is seeking volunteers to help bring comfort and companionship to clients during this time of year and beyond.

Volunteers play a vital role in the lives of clients, offering socialization, engagement, and kindness. Typical activities include playing cards or games like cribbage, doing puzzles, reading aloud, assisting with letter writing, or simply sharing conversation over a cup of coffee. For some, it’s an opportunity to talk, laugh, and reminisce; for others, it’s a chance to have someone present in what might otherwise be a quiet day.

The program also provides an important benefit to caregivers, offering them a brief respite to rest, run errands, or take care of personal needs. As Jenny Harper, Home Care/Hospice Supervisor explains, "Volunteering for a Home Care/Hospice client is not just about offering help, but about sharing your time, kindness, and heart—bringing comfort and companionship when it’s needed most."

Volunteering is flexible and can fit into your schedule. A volunteer’s time commitment depends
on their availability and the number of clients in need. Whether it’s one visit a month or a few hours each week, every bit of time donated is valuable and appreciated. Volunteers can choose the frequency and duration of their visits, making it an ideal opportunity for anyone looking to give back.

Mille Lacs Health System ensures all volunteers are prepared and supported. Volunteers undergo a background check, receive training on topics such as patient privacy (HIPAA), proper handwashing techniques, and are equipped with everything they need to confidently interact with clients.

This program serves the areas surrounding all MLHS clinics, including Onamia, Isle, Garrison, Hillman, and Milaca. There is a particular need for volunteers in the southern areas, such as Milaca and Princeton.
