Butterfly Release Fundraiser

August 9, 2024

Mille Lacs Health System is proud to be hosting the 24th annual “Spirit of the Wings” Hospice & Home Care fundraiser event. This event is an important fundraiser for the hospice program and also provides a way for local families to honor loved ones they have lost with a beautiful Monarch butterfly release.

The Mille Lacs Health System hospice program focuses on terminally ill patients and their families. The team approach to care promotes dignity and quality of life, while addressing the physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual needs of both patient and family. The hospice program allows clients to remain in their homes while nurses, physical/occupational therapists, home health aides, homemaking, massage therapists, doctors, pastors, and volunteers come to them and provide palliative care during their end of life.

Our hospice volunteers are an essential part of our care, and we can never have enough people or offerings. Areas needing additional volunteers are massage therapy, music therapy, and spiritual counselors. Geographically, we cover approximately a 40 mile radius from our main campus in Onamia. Our southern locations like Milaca and Princeton have the greatest need for volunteers. When, what, and how often you volunteer is at your discretion and availability. If you are interested in learning more, please reach out to our hospice department at 320-532-2800.

The “Spirit of the Wings” event will be held Saturday, August 17, 2024 at 12:00 p.m., at the Ellen Ruth park in Wahkon. You can purchase a butterfly in honor of a loved one you have lost by contacting the MLHS Home Care and Hospice Dept. at 320-532-2800. You can also visit the Mille Lacs Area Health Foundation’s website at www.mlahf.org/butterfly-release to submit names of loved ones and pay online.

The Spirit of the Wings event will have live music beginning at 11:30 a.m., a devotion, a summary of the hospice program, a reading of all the names of those being honored and remembered, and finish with a beautiful release of butterflies. If you are unable to join us, the butterfly representing your loved one will be released for you.

All are welcome. You are not required to sponsor a butterfly to attend the event.  Please come and enjoy the experience with family and friends.
