Annual St. Francis Award Winner

Mille Lacs Health System (MLHS) is proud to recognize Sharon Grassel, Rehabilitation Manager, as the recipient of the 2024 St. Francis Award. The award was presented at the MLHS Holiday Party on Friday, January 24, 2025. Established in 1989, the St. Francis Award honors employees who embody the organization’s values and serve as role models in compassionate care. Nominated by their peers, recipients are recognized for their dedication, kindness, and the positive impact they make on both patients and colleagues.

Grassel’s journey with MLHS began in 2006, when a move from North Dakota to Minnesota brought her searching for a new job. Looking for a physical therapist position, and accepting what she thought would be a temporary role as Rehab Manager as well soon turned into a lasting career. Her leadership and commitment to the Rehab team have helped foster an environment of excellence, where patients receive skilled and heartfelt care at every visit.

During the award presentation, Janell Holmquist (colleague, friend, and past St. Francis recipient) described Grassel as someone who “brings out the best in those around her—always positive, smiling, and kind, with a quick-witted sense of humor.” She also highlighted Grassel’s deep commitment to her patients, saying, “She gives nothing less than 100% to her patients, dropping whatever she is doing to put them first. She listens, she cares, and she makes a difference.”

In her nomination, colleagues also praised Grassel’s unwavering dedication and leadership. One nominator shared, “She has developed a wound care program here at MLHS that has truly saved limbs and lives.” Another noted her ability to support and uplift her team, ensuring they feel valued and respected for their skills and contributions.

When receiving the award, Grassel expressed her gratitude, saying, “This place is different, it’s special, and the people who work here are special. I’ve been blessed to be trusted with the care of patients, to be part of their stories, and to work with a team that demonstrates integrity and resilience every day. This is an incredible honor.”
