The group Alzheimer’s Ride for the Mind has given a donation of $5,000 to Lake Song Assisted Living in Onamia for their Memory Care Unit. Lonna Schmidtbauer, Housing Manager of Lake Song said, “We will use this money to assist with using alternative methods that revolve around engaging the senses through aromatherapy. We will be purchasing multiple mobile vaporizers that will be able to be used in both public areas and residents’ rooms, as well as safe, toxic-free essential oils.”
The therapy uses aromas to stimulate a variety of senses, promoting both relaxation and a sense of well-being.
Aromatherapy is useful for such issues as: sleep problems, increasing appetite and providing calming effects for those who may be “sun-downing” (sun-downing is a symptom of Alzheimer's disease and other forms of dementia. It's also known as “late-day confusion.”) “I feel very passionate about this and I am grateful to Ride for the Mind for their donations to this cause,” said Schmidtbauer.
In addition to the aromatherapy equipment, donated money from Ride for the Mind will also pay for the It’s Never 2 Late (IN2L) computer system’s yearly fees. The system was purchased last year for the facility. IN2L is a picture-based touch-screen that allows users to simply “touch” their way to find things like education, games, spiritual content, e-mail, web cams, era-specific music and movies. Users can also “travel” to places they may have always wanted to visit, or places that they have been to via virtual trip using the computer. “It’s a great asset for our residents,” stated Schmidtbauer.
Ride for the Mind is based in Pierz, MN and organizes motorcycle rides which help raise money for Alzheimer’s research. This year marked their 13th year. In the past, they have been very successful with raising money for this cause.
