Dr. Mohan Karki has joined the providers at Mille Lacs Health System as the newest family practice physician.
Dr. Karki comes to the facility with a strong background in rural medicine, both in this country and in his native Nepal. After graduating from Manipal College of Medical Science in Nepal ̶ a private medical college ̶ he worked at Tansen Mission Hospital in India. After spending some time teaching medical students Pharmacology in China, he then came to the United States and did his medical residency at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center.
Although Dr. Karki has done internships in Arizona and Chicago, and most recently practiced medicine in North Dakota, his love for smaller, rural hospitals has brought him to the Mille Lacs area. Married to a doctor (who will be on staff at MLHS in the spring), Karki says he went into medicine because he was interested in taking care of medically underserved people. “And,” he says, “I believe that practicing medicine is not just about curing a disease. It’s about a relationship, between doctor and patient, a relationship based on trust and respect.” Karki is delighted to be able to treat patients in a small hospital setting, and he will be out in the Hillman clinic a couple days a week as well.
Although from Nepal, Dr. Karki says he enjoys winter weather the best, and is happy to be living in the Mille Lacs area near water. He says he was especially attracted to the physicians and staff at MLHS. “I really like their friendliness and how great they work together as a team,” he says. MLHS welcomes Dr. Karki to their family of care.
