Mille Lacs Health System is a Veteran’s Choice Program provider, according to Dawn Buck, Manager of Patient Accounts at MLHS. Eligible Veterans, beginning in November, now have the option to receive non-VA health care rather than waiting for a VA appointment or traveling to a VA facility.
Veterans are eligible if any of these situations apply:

  • You have been told by your local VA medical facility that you will need to wait more than 30 days from your preferred date or the date medically determined by your physician.
  • Your current residence is more than 40 miles from the closest VA health care facility.

Every Veteran should have, by now, received a letter and a Choice Card in the mail with details about the program. Mille Lacs Health System is able to see patients who are Veterans but “the patient should call the number on their card to make sure they qualify,” Dawn Buck notes. “The VA Choice program staff will make the appointment for the patient. A vet can even request a specific provider and time frame that works for them. We want patients to have timely and convenient access to health care closer to home, but a patient shouldn’t call MLHS first to do that. They should call the Veteran’s Choice Program number instead.”
