The third annual $500 Beth Cunz Nursing Scholarship is awarded each year to one Mille Lacs Health System employee who is actively enrolled in a nursing program. To be eligible, an employee has to be enrolled in an LPN or RN nursing program, and be an employee at MLHS. This year’s recipient is Katie Gerwing, R.N., who has been an R.N. Coordinator for the past two years at MLHS’s Long Term Care facility. She is attending Minnesota State University Moorehead, pursuing an R.N. to B.S.N. program.

Founder of the scholarship, Tom Cunz, presented a check to Gerwing, along with Dennis Burr, who is the Mille Lacs Area Health Foundation president. The MLAHF helps to select the candidate and distributes the scholarship monies each year. The scholarship honors Cunz’s late wife, Beth, who was a beloved nurse at Mille Lacs Health System for many years. She was killed by a drunk driver while taking her daily walk. Cunz was known to be a strong patient advocate, often visiting patients in the community who had been discharged from the hospital, to bring them a meal or special treat.

“I’m so grateful,” said Gerwing. “The opportunity to advance my skills through furthering my education is important and I appreciate the help from the Cunz family and the Mille Lacs Area Health Foundation.”
